## About Checkers: Mill Town

You have worked at the mill since you were twelve, and you have watched people play on this table for every one of those years. Tonight somebody asks whether you want a game.

A Lancashire mill town, 1851. Draughts is played in the tap room of the Weavers' Arms for a penny a game, at the mechanics' institute for a shilling a quarter, at the Corn Exchange in front of a crowd, and once, in Glasgow, across a table from a man who has not been beaten in eleven years.

## Twenty-two people, not twenty-two difficulty settings

Every opponent is somebody. Amos Tench drinks at the Weavers' every night and plays a slow, grinding game. Nan Pike winds at the mill and will not play for nothing. Betsy Shaw keeps the bar and watches everything. Margaret Hoyle beat the whole institute the year they let her in. They speak their own lines aloud - nearly three hundred recorded lines between them - they remember what you have done to them, and they say so.

## Nobody just sits down

Before a game you talk. Offer a penny, offer nothing, boast, or ask for a piece of odds - and what you choose changes the game you get and what they think of you afterwards. A grinder will take your penny. Somebody who has beaten you twice will not need it.

## The rule everything turns on

If you can take, you must. Not a setting, not a variant - the rule the game is built on, and the one that will lose you a match you were winning. The board shows you when your choice has been made for you.

## Four rooms, and you win your way in

The pub is open to anybody. The night class wants three wins in the pub first. The tournament wants five at the class. The match is one man, across a table, for as long as it takes. Buying the game does not open a room - it only lets you go and earn it.

## And one for two people

A quick game will sit two of you at the same machine with the engine turned off, and that is free.

## What is free and what is not

The tap room and its four players are free, with the whole conversation spoken aloud, every voice included, and no time limit. One purchase opens the remaining eighteen opponents and the three rooms they are in.

The game shows small advertisements for this developer's own apps while it is unlocked-free; the purchase removes them. They are ours, served from our own site, with no advertising network, no tracking and no profile of you.

## Features

- Twenty-two opponents with names, faces and histories - a mill winder who plays for pennies, an overlooker who never lets you forget it, a shepherd who became champion of Scotland
- Spoken aloud: more than three hundred recorded lines, with every opponent in the pub, the night class and the Corn Exchange talking to you in their own voice
- Nobody just sits down: every game opens with a conversation, and what you offer decides what you are playing for
- Four rooms - a tap room, a mechanics' institute night class, a county tournament, and a championship match
- You do not buy your way up. Win three in the pub before the night class will have you
- The three-move ballot at the higher standards, drawn and named the way the old matches did it
- Compulsory capture, properly: a jump is not an option even when taking it loses you the game
- Two players at one machine, free, with no engine in the way
- A record kept against every person you play, and told back to you as a sentence rather than a scoreboard
- Offline. No account, no server, and nothing about your play leaves the machine
- Free to play the tap room. One purchase opens the other three rooms, forever
